Gyakie lays bare the matters of the heart in ‘My Diary’

Gyakie lays bare the matters of the heart in ‘My Diary’.

Gyakie is one of the strongest voices on the Ghanaian side of Afrobeats, and her music’s popularity has made her one of the musicians whose sound has blurred the barriers between Nigerian and Ghanaian music.

Her debut EP, ‘SEED,’ will be released in 2020. Gyakie had an amazing ability to shape melody and transmit her views relatably and logically in order to make simply consumable music, which is a primary driving force behind Nigeria’s Afrobeats popularity. It’s no surprise that her song ‘Forever’ found a ready audience among Nigerians.

‘My Diary,’ Gyakie’s second act, gives calming record of the depth of her sentiments and passions as they relate to her amorous and creative undertakings.

Gyakie’s seeks to portray a narrative of love and passion and eases listeners in with a flawless Jazz performance enhanced by vocals and the insertion of Ghanaian highlife music.

Through a series of tracks, ‘My Diary’ delves into Gyakie’s love fantasies. ‘Far Away,’ ‘For My Baby,’ ‘Flames,’ and ‘Something’ are love songs that portray the delicate concerns of the heart in a straightforward yet honest manner.

Gyakie’s words in ‘For My Baby,’ ‘Something,’ and the Davido-assisted ‘Flames’ demonstrated the urgency and depth of her wishes. The lyrical rendition’s R&B sound also portrays a picture of the thought-filled music that the ‘My Diary’ EP is designed to communicate.

To create a good balance, she readily combines English, Pidgin, and her indigenous tongue. The verses blend into the chorus to form an easy pleasurable tune powered by an enticing melody and simple words that listeners can grasp on their first hearing.

Gyakie’s ability to seamlessly flip between soundscapes is one of her distinguishing strengths, and she doesn’t hold back with this EP. Gyakie presented a rhythmic reggae interpretation of ‘Far Away,’ delivering a wonderful tune.

Similarly, Gyakie demonstrates a scary spectrum of her skill in ‘Waka Waka,’ a Ghanaian signature marriage of Hip Hop/Dancehall. Gyakie transitions to rap and delivers high-quality chest-thumping lines in her own tongue. She intermingled her flow with melody to produce a song that not only demonstrates her variety, but also the depth of her craft by connecting to the origins of Ghanaian mainstream music.

Final Thoughts

‘My Diary’ maintains thematic and musical consistency while being enjoyable. The writing is simple, sympathetic, yet sophisticated.

In terms of popularity, Gyakie was able to develop an EP whose appeal extends beyond Ghanaian listeners and musically crosses countries.

The album sequencing and track layout make it simple to listen. The simple sound in songs 1-5 allows Gyakie’s beautiful voice and melodies to take center stage, which contributes to the album’s easy digestion.

The sole stumbling block on the album could be the Davido-assisted ‘Flames,’ which lacked the sound harmony and enjoyability one would anticipate from a duet. Aside from that, the ‘My Diary’ EP is a relaxing record that succeeds on all fronts.
